How MeetMe works
No mystery algorithm talk. Here is what actually happens, in order, and what we do and do not do with what you give us.
How it works
1. Verify your phone number
You enter your number and we send a six-digit code by SMS. This is how we keep duplicate and automated accounts down. Your number is never shown on your profile, never given to another member and never used for advertising.
2. Tell us your age and accept the rules
You give your date of birth once. MeetMe is 18 and over, and the date cannot be changed later without going through support — that protects everyone. You also accept the Terms, Privacy Notice and Community Guidelines, and we record which version you agreed to.
3. Say what you are looking for
Friendship, dating, something serious, marriage-minded, or still figuring it out. This is used to find people who said something compatible. You can change it whenever you like.
4. Build your profile
A display name, your photos, a short bio, the languages you speak, your interests and a few prompts. Education, work and lifestyle details are optional, and each one has its own visibility switch. Photos are checked before they go live.
5. Set your discovery preferences
Age range, distance, who you want to see, and whether you would rather see verified members first. You can pause discovery at any time without deleting your account.
6. Like, match, and only then talk
We suggest people; you like or pass. If you both like each other it becomes a match and a conversation opens. Until that moment, nobody can send you a message.
How we choose who to show you
In this order, every time:
- People who are eligible and active
- Inside your distance and age settings
- Whose intention is compatible with yours
- Excluding anyone blocked, already seen, or excluded through your contacts
- Then ranked on shared interests, distance, how recently they were active, profile completeness and verification
We do not infer or rank on caste, religion, income or any similar sensitive attribute, and we do not show anyone an attractiveness score. Ranking happens on our servers, never in the app.
After you match
You get a conversation, read receipts you can switch off, and typing indicators. You can unmatch at any time, which removes the conversation for both of you. If something goes wrong you can report from inside the chat, and the relevant messages go to a reviewer with the report.
Questions people ask at this point
Can I use MeetMe without photos?
You need at least one photo of yourself to enter discovery — it is the main thing that stops impersonation. But your photos are only visible to signed-in members, never on the public web.
What happens if I pass on someone by mistake?
Undo is available on a paid plan, and it only reverses your own last decision. It cannot undo a match, a block or a report — those are deliberately permanent.
Does the other person know I looked at their profile?
No. There is no “who viewed you” list. They only learn about you if you like them and they like you back.
That is the whole thing
Five minutes to set up, and you can pause or delete it whenever you want.
