Safety centre
Most people you meet will be exactly who they say they are. This page is for the times they are not — and for the ordinary precautions that make a first meeting easier for everyone.
Before you meet
Talk in the app first
Stay in MeetMe until you are comfortable. Moving to another app early is one of the most common things a scammer asks for, because it removes our safety tools.
Video or voice call once
A short call before meeting confirms the person matches their photos. Someone who refuses every call but pushes hard to meet is worth a second thought.
Choose the place yourself
Somewhere public, staffed and busy — a café, a mall, a well-used park in daylight. Never a home, a hotel room, or a car for a first meeting.
Tell someone where you are going
The place, the time and the person's name. Share your live location with a friend for the duration if your phone can.
Arrange your own transport
Both ways. Do not accept a lift from someone you have just met, and book your own ride rather than sharing theirs.
Keep the first meeting short
An hour is plenty. Agreeing in advance that it is short means leaving early needs no excuse.
While you are there
Keep your phone charged and on you
Not on the table, not in a bag you have handed over.
Watch your drink
Order it yourself, watch it being made, and do not leave it unattended.
Do not share documents or money
No NIC photos, no bank details, no transfers, no “just hold this for me”. Not on a first meeting, not on a tenth.
Trust the feeling
You do not owe anyone an explanation. Tell the staff if you feel unsafe — asking for help in a café or restaurant is normal and they will help.
Leave when you want to leave
Not when the other person is ready. Ending early is not rude.
How to spot a scam
Romance and investment scams follow patterns. If several of these are true at once, stop and report.
- They want to move to WhatsApp, Telegram or Viber within the first few messages
- The relationship becomes intense very fast — declarations of love within days
- They always have a reason not to video call
- They mention crypto, forex, gold or a “sure” investment opportunity
- There is an emergency: a hospital bill, a stuck parcel, customs, a visa fee
- They ask you to receive or forward money for them
- They ask for intimate photos, then reference them when you hesitate
- Their photos look like stock or model images and appear elsewhere online
The tools on your account
All of these are free on every account and always will be.
Block
Immediate and mutual. They disappear from your discovery and you from theirs. They are not notified.
Unmatch
Ends the match and removes the conversation for both people straight away.
Report
From a profile, a match, a conversation or a single message. You can report while unmatching.
Hide yourself
Pause discovery, hide your distance, hide your last-active time, or use private discovery so only people you have liked can see you.
Exclude your contacts
Stop people in your phone's contacts from being shown to you, and you to them, without uploading your address book in readable form.
Message filtering
We check messages for known scam patterns and unsafe links before they arrive, and warn you rather than quietly deleting.
Reporting and what happens next
Reports go to trained reviewers who work in Sinhala, Tamil and English. The person you report is never told who reported them.
- Open the profile, match, conversation or message and choose Report.
- Pick the closest category — fake identity, scam, harassment, threats, inappropriate content, underage concern, offline safety concern, or other.
- Add anything you think matters. The relevant messages are attached automatically as evidence.
- You get a confirmation immediately. We do not tell you what action was taken against another person's account, because that is their private data.

Safety questions
Does the person I blocked find out?
No. A block is silent. They simply stop seeing you and you stop seeing them, and any existing conversation closes.
Will I be told what happened to someone I reported?
We confirm that your report was received and reviewed, but we cannot tell you what action was taken on another person's account — that would be disclosing their personal data.
Do I have to pay to block or report?
No. Blocking, unmatching, reporting, hiding your distance, pausing discovery and private discovery are free on every account and are never part of a paid plan.
Ready when you are
Create an account in about a minute. You can pause, hide or delete it at any time.
